Tom Sachs is a sculptor born in New York, NY and known for his reproductions of American objects. After attending the Architectural Association in London in 1987, Sachs earned a BA from Bennington College in Vermont in 1989. Using a variety of materials, including foamcore, bronze, plywood, automotive paint, and glue, Sachs constructs sculptures of recognizable icons of pop culture, such as Hello Kitty and McDonald’s restaurants. One of his best known works, a replica of the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module (2007), is made from steel, plywood, electronics, and other tools, and reflects Sachs’ interest in space exploration and Cold War history. His larger-than-life sculptures and fountains inspired by Sanrio characters, such as Hello Kitty and Miffy, were displayed in 2009 at New York’s Lever House and in Paris, France. Many of Sachs’ sculptures are intended to demonstrate the building process, so that screws and seams are deliberately visible; in this way, even works that are considered whole are not necessarily finished.
Sachs’ works have been exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, CA, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, NY and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, NY, among many others. He currently lives and works in New York, NY.
